Men’s Soccer Downs Harvard at Home, 2-1, Moves to Top of Ivy Table

PHILADELPHIA – Down go the Crimson, as the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team defeated Harvard Sunday afternoon at Penn Park, 2-1. The game was broadcast to a national television audience on ESPNU.

The Crimson were handed their first Ivy League loss of the season as Michael Hewes and Stas Korzeniowski netted goals to lift Penn to its second win in two matches. Both the Quakers (5-3-5 overall) and the Crimson (4-4-6 overall) moved to 2-1-2 in conference play and are level at the top of the Ivy standings alongside Cornell, all with eight points three five matches. Penn holds the tiebreaker over both the Big Red and the Crimson, having beaten both this season.

*After not having to save a shot on goal during Tuesday's match, goalkeeper Nick Christoffersen captured five today. The senior holds a .800 save percentage to go along with a 0.69 goals-against-average.

*Hewes tallied a goal in back-to-back games this week to lead the offense with six goals on the season.

*Korzeniowski has scored a goal in both Ivy League victories this year, netting the game-winner against Cornell back on Oct. 7 and one today against Harvard.

*Juniors Charlie Gaffney and Aaron Messer recorded their first points of the season after lending helping hands on Hewes and Korzeniowski's goals.

*Six of Harvard's shots on goal came in the second half, with three coming from the Crimson's goal scorer Alessandro Arlotti.

How It Happened
Harvard opened the match with a turnover off kickoff that resulted in Hewes almost hitting the back of the net just 21 seconds in, but the Crimson's goalkeeper Lucian Wood saved it to correct his teammate's mistake.

Around the ten-minute mark, senior Hewes was able to find the back of the net after heading the ball in off assists from Korzeniowski and Gaffney to push Penn ahead 1-0.

Shortly after Hewes' goal, Harvard tallied its first shot of the match and sole shot in the half during the 13th minute. Ethan Veghte attempted the first shot Christoffersen had faced in 173 minutes that the goalkeeper easily saved to keep Penn's lead at one.

Junior Korzeniowski caught some fire in the 17th minute, almost hitting the back of the Crimson's net, but their goalkeeper scooped it up quickly. Not taking the save lightly, Korzeniowski kept putting shots on net and nailed his fifth goal of the season off a dish from Messer in the 33rd to double the lead to 2-0.

Harvard's Andreas Savva attempted back-to-back shots in the 39th minute, but both were redirected before they could reach Christoffersen to close out both teams' offensive attempts in the first half.

Senior Michael teDuits opened the second half with a shot at Wood that was saved to give a forewarning of how intense the second half would be. The Crimson tried to get one past Christoffersen two minutes later in the 47th and then again in the 49th off a free kick, but the senior made the saves to keep the score at 2-0 Penn.

Ben Do broke an 11-minute offensive lull with a shot at the Crimson's goalkeeper in the 60th minute, but a defender got it before an additional Quakers could nail a rebound.

Harvard cut Penn's lead in half in the 65th minute after Arlotti slammed his third shot of the half. Senior Mateo Zazueta tried to get the goal back in the 67th minute with a shot to the top left of the net that was about to go in, but Harvard's goalkeeper reached for it at the last second.

The Crimson's last push of the match happened during the 87th minute when Harvard tried to notch another goal to tie the game, but Christoffersen leaped into the air to keep the match at 2-1 and extend the Quakers' home streak.
