PHILADELPHIA – The James C. Gentle Head Coach for the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer program,
Brian Gill, announced the team's captains for the 2022 season. Graduates
Isaac McGinnis and
Ben Stitz and seniors
Nick Christoffersen and Nick Schimeno will guide the Quakers on the pitch, with regular season play beginning Friday night against Rider.
"These four young men have grown a lot during their time at Penn and within the program," said Gill. "As a group, they work well together and have the ability to connect in different ways with the whole team. I am excited to seem them lead their teammates throughout the season."
McGinnis earns captain status for the second straight season. The midfielder has appeared in 41 games over the last three seasons, starting 25 of his last 28 appearances dating back to the 2019 season. He played more than 1,200 minutes last season, fourth on the team, and scored two goals, including the lone goal of the match against Monmouth. He earned Second-team All-Ivy honors for his on-field efforts.
Stitz has been among the most consistent presences in the Penn line-up dating back to the middle of the 2018 season, starting 38 of his last 40 appearances. Last season, Stitz joined midfield mate McGinnis on the All-Ivy Second-team after posting a two-goal, eight-assist effort during the season, including a three-point effort against Colgate and a five-point effort against Mount St. Mary's. He also delivered the corner kick that led to McGinnis' goal in the 1-0 win over Monmouth.
Christoffersen becomes the full-time starter this season in net after splitting time with
Dane Jacomen last Fall. Christoffersen started seven matches last season, posting a 1.41 goals-against-average and a .615 save percentage, including a shutout against Colgate in his first start of the season.
Schimbeno joined the starting lineup in the latter half of last season, playing every minute of seven of the last eight matches, helping the Quakers hold the opposition to one goal or fewer in six of those eight contests.
