No. 8 Women's Squash Opens Howe Cup Friday Afternoon with No. 1 Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The No. 8 University of Pennsylvania's women's squash team (8-7) heads to Harvard for its 19th consecutive College Squash Association (CSA) Howe Cup in search of the program's first national championship, starting with a quarterfinal matchup on Friday at 12:30 p.m. against the No. 1 Crimson, the six-time reigning national champions.
 
Previewing Penn
The then-No. 9 Quakers wrapped the regular season on February 6 with a critical 6-3 win over then-No. 8 Cornell, its 25th straight win over the Big Red rating back to January 2002. The win capped a regular season for the Quakers that featured seven wins over top 20 teams and four 9-0 sweeps.
 
Avni Anand led the team with 11 victories during the season, winning at least three matches at the #3, #4, and #5 spots in the lineup. Emma Wolf was second on the team with eight wins, including a 4-0 mark from the #7 spot.
 
Euwie Park wrapped the regular season 7-1, with wins at #3, #5, #7, and #9, and Navmi Sharma enters the Howe Cup 7-3 on the year, with wins at #4, #5, #6, and #9.

Previewing the Crimson
Harvard finished the regular season 12-0, running their winning streak as a team to 96 matches. Harvard's last defeat was a 5-4 loss to Penn back in January 2015.
 
The 13 women who played for Harvard this season won 89 of 106 matches in all. Hana Moataz finished the regular season 9-1, all of her matches coming from the #1 spot in the lineup. Marina Stefanoni finished the season 7-1 at the #2 spot and 9-1 overall. Habiba Eldafrawy went 9-0 between the #3 and #4 spots in the lineup, finishing 10-1 overall.
 
Howe Cup Information
The Howe Cup serves as the premier event in women's collegiate squash, with the top eight teams competing for a national championship. Each team plays three matches regardless of results, with the completed matches serving to reseed each of the eight programs at the end of the year.
 
Should the Quakers knock off Harvard on Friday, they would face the winner of Yale and Columbia in the semifinal. Should they lose, the Quakers would play the loser of the Yale/Columbia match in the consolation bracket.
