PHILADELPHIA -- The Penn men's soccer coaching staff, led by head coach
Brian Gill, has been named the Northeast Regional Staff of the Year, as announced by the United Soccer Coaches on Tuesday.
Penn won the Ivy League this season and made its 11th NCAA Championships. Picked fifth in the conference pre-season poll, Penn started the year 1-1-1, then reeled off an eight-match win streak, including a 4-0-0 start to Ivy play, taking a spot atop the standings they did not relinquish, capped by a 3-0 win over Princeton in the regular season finale, the team's first victory over the Tigers since 2013.
The Quakers' regular season success was rewarded with an NCAA first round home match against Rutgers, ending in a 3-0 win for the Red and Blue. Penn's season came to an end with a 2-1 overtime loss to Syracuse in the second round of the NCAAs.
In addition to his Soccer Coaches recognition, Gill was also the Ivy's unanimous choice for Coach of the Year. In all, seven players were named to All-Ivy teams with sophomores
Stas Korzeniowski and
Leo Burney earning Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year merit, respectively.
All-Region honors have not yet been announced by the organization.
The staff will be honored at the College Coaches Reception on Jan. 12, 2023 at the United Soccer Coaches Convention right here in Philadelphia. In addition, all regional staff winners will be placed on the ballot for National Staff of the Year, which will be announced on Friday. Dec. 16.
