Baseball Sweeps a Doubleheader at La Salle

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team swept a doubleheader at La Salle on Saturday. The Quaker (6-8) won the opener, 7-6, before scoring a 16-3 victory over the Explorers (26-15) in game two.

Penn starter Brian Zeldin picked up the win in game one for the Quakers after tossing six innings and striking out six, while Bryce Mangene earned the victory in game two.

At the plate, Craig Larsen went 5-for-8 on the day with one walk, five runs scored and one RBI. Freshman Wyatt Henseler ended his season on a high note as he four hits and five RBI in the two games.

GAME 1
After La Salle opened the scoring in the home half of the second, Penn took the lead for good with a five-run outburst in the fourth inning. During the frame, Seth Werchan delivered an RBI single up the middle, Tommy Courtney reached on an error that plated a pair, Eduardo Malinowski brought Courtney home following another Explorer fielding miscue and Wyatt Henseler delivered a run-scoring double down the left-field line.

La Salle answered with a run in the bottom half of the fourth. Both teams would score in the fifth and sixth frames with Penn getting another RBI single from Werchan and an RBI double from Malinowski.

The Explorers scored twice in the sixth and once in the seventh to pull within one at 7-6.

Senior Brendan Bean came on in relief in the eighth inning for the Red and Blue and he would go on to retire all six batters he would face to earn his first save of the season and the second of his career. He fanned two hitters during his stint.

GAME 2
The Quakers picked up where they left off. Penn jumped on La Salle for four runs in the top of the first. In the opening half, Andrew Hernandez had an RBI single, Ben Miller had a two-run double and Craig Larsen hit a sacrifice fly.

Penn starter Cole Zaffiro worked four scoreless innings before giving way to the bullpen. In the fifth, the Explorers got on board with three runs to cut the deficit to 7-3.
