PHILADELPHIA – Freshman
Cole Palis sent a 2-1 pitch through the left side to deliver the game-winning run as the University of Pennsylvania baseball team scored an 8-7 walk-off win in extra innings against La Salle on Tuesday at Meiklejohn Stadium.
The Quakers (4-7) erased an early 5-0 deficit to bounce back from a setback last time out against the Explorers (20-12).
Left-hander
Brendan Bean worked a perfect 1-2-3 top of the 10th to pick up his first win of the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
La Salle chased Penn starter
Joe Miller after a third of an inning. The Explorers scored five runs on four hits before
Kevin Eaise came on to get the Quakers out of trouble.
The Quakers chipped away with a run in the bottom of the first courtesy of a run-scoring groundout from
Wyatt Henseler before adding three runs in the second inning. In the second,
Seth Werchan had an RBI double and
Justin Carboni had a two-run single.
The two teams traded runs in both the third and fourth frames as La Salle clung to a 7-6 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, Penn pulled even after a fielder's choice from
Andrew Hernandez scored
Eduardo Malinowski.
Penn threatened in the ninth as
Tommy Courtney led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on a sac bunt. The Quakers were unable to push Courtney across as the game went to extra innings.
In the 10th,
Cole Palis came on to pinch hit with the bases loaded and one out. He sent a 2-1 pitch past a diving La Salle infielder to score pinch runner
Drew Rogers.
