How It Happened
Brown went three-and-out to open the game, and Penn immediately took advantage with the game's first score. Starting at its own 43, the Quakers mixed the run and the pass over eight plays, culminating in
Aidan Sayin fooling the Brown defense and lofting a pass over the Bears to a wide-open
Ryan Cragun in the end zone. The scoring play covered 13 yards.
Brown looked like it might be in trouble on its next drive, facing third-and-17 from its 18-yard line. Instead, EJ Perry found Wes Rockett to cover the ground—barely—and from there the Bears moved methodically down the field (converting a pair of fourth-down plays along the way). In all, the drive took 15 plays and took nearly seven minutes, ending when Perry hit Allen Smith on a screen and he ran untouched to paydirt along the right side.
Penn was flagged for roughing the passer on the Brown TD play, allowing Bruno to kick off from the Quakers' 45-yard line. Not surprisingly, the visitors tried an onside kick but Penn was ready with its "hands team" and
Trey Flowers fell on the ball. From there, Sayin found Cragun for 20 yards along the right sideline and then
Isaiah Malcome busted through the gut into daylight and a 45-yard touchdown rush.
Brown went three-and-out on its next drive, and Penn doubled its lead as the game moved into the second quarter. The Quakers used eight plays to cover 69 yards and made it 21-7 when Sayin rolled out to his right and threaded a pass over one Bears defender and in front of another, hitting
Joshua Casilli right in the numbers for a 12-yard score that was the sophomore's first as a collegian.
Just two plays later, Penn's defense got into the scoring act when Perry overthrew his receiver and the ball went into the arms of
Garrett Morris. The senior briefly bobbled the ball but pulled it in and took it 42 yards to the house, winning a footrace with Perry to the right pylon.
Brown made it a 28-10 game on its next drive, the Bears getting to Penn's 23-yard line before having to settle for a 48-yard field goal that Christopher Maron put between the uprights. Penn got those points right back after
Lawson Nash recovered another onside-kick attempt by the Bears on the Quakers side of midfield. Penn drove to Brown's 16-yard line, and the lead went back to 21 when
Daniel Karrash hit a 40-yard field goal.
Brown had two more chances to score before halftime, but Jason McCleod intercepted a Perry pass in the end zone and then
Micah Morris blocked Maron's 54-yard field goal attempt to send the teams into the locker rooms with Penn leading, 31-10.
The third quarter didn't have nearly the fireworks of the first half, until late in the period when Penn started on its own 25. On second-and-10, Malcome again busted through the middle and soon he was off to the races. He was ultimately tracked down at the 10-yard line by Treyvon Hobbs who took him down with a horse-collar tackle that moved the ball to the 5. On the next play,
Julien Stokes went around the left side for his first collegiate touchdown and Penn's lead was 38-10.
Penn capped its scoring early in the fourth, taking advantage when Brown was unsuccessful on a fourth-down play at its own 17. The Quakers handed the ball off to Flowers four times in five plays, the fourth getting him into the end zone. Brown closed out the scoring in the game late in the period, Perry hitting Walker for 21 yards.
