Men's Soccer Takes 2OT Ivy Thriller From Dartmouth, 2-1

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team picked up their first Ivy League win of the season Saturday night, coming from behind for the second time in a week, knocking off Dartmouth College, 2-1, in double overtime from Rhodes Field

Goals by freshmen Leo Burney and Stas Korzeniowski gave the Quakers their sixth win of the season while the Big Green fell to 1-9.

Quaker Notemeal
*After senior Dane Jacomen stopped a career-high 11 shots in Tuesday's win over Drexel, junior Nick Christoffersen set a new career-best with eight saves Saturday.

*Korzeniowski's game-winner was his third goal of the season; he's the first freshman with three goals in a season since Jake Kohlbrenner in 2017. No freshman has scored more than three goals in a season since Sam Heyward and Alec Neumann scored five apiece in 2013.

*The Quakers have now posted two comeback victories in the last five days after going nearly six years without any such wins.

How It Happened
A quiet first 15 minutes yielded just one (long) on-target attempt, and two attempts total. In the 17th minute, Gaffney let one rip from just outside the 18-yard box, but the Dartmouth keeper was well-positioned for the save.

Dartmouth had a good look from in close in the 19th minute, but Christoffersen's solid positioning led to an easy save.

In the 40th minute, Korzeniowski used good body and ball control to create space for a pass to an open Anthony Rovito, but the senior fired a shot off the left post.

Christoffersen stuffed a header from the Big Green in the 43rd minute, the final scoring threat from either side in the half.

Dartmouth finally broke through in the 82nd minute when Jordan Bailon scored one from distance. With time running short for the Quakers, Burney moved up from his position on the backline and soared above the Big Green, heading home a corner kick from graduate Joey Bhangdia in the 86th minute.

After both teams went scoreless down the stretch in regulation and through the first overtime session, midway through the second overtime, Korzeniowski made a run to the top of the 18-yard box, took a feed from senior Isaac McGinnis, and fired a left-footed shot that the Dartmouth keeper slowed, but could not keep out of the box, setting off a raucous celebration from the Penn sideline

Up Next
For the second straight Tuesday, the Quakers will host a Philly Soccer Six match when the Temple Owls come to Rhodes Field for a 7 p.m. opening kick.
