PHILADELPHIA – The
Philadelphia Inquirer has announced its Academic All-Area Men's and Women's At-Large teams have been released. On the men's side, University of Pennsylvania junior
Andrew Douglas (men's squash) has been named co-Performer of the Year along with Drexel wrestler Ebed Jarrell.
The
Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Teams are voted on by the athletic communication offices of 30 institutions in the Philadelphia region. In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area consideration, an athlete must be in his or her second year at an institution and boast a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or better.
Douglas adds another honor to his extensive trophy case. The junior already became the first Quakers player to be named a three-time first-team All-America. A unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection this year, Douglas has been named first-team All-Ivy three times and served as a co-captain for the first time this season. His efforts have helped propel the squash program to new heights, reaching #1 in the nation last season and reaching the first Potter Cup final in program history this season, all while playing the top spot in the lineup. A leader on and off the court, Douglas was named Academic All-Ivy for the 2018-19 season and adds his second academic honor and first Academic All-Area distinction.
In addition to Douglas, three other Quakers men have been named to the at-large team. Senior
Adam Green (men's fencing), junior
Aaron Johnson (sprint football) and sophomore
Xiteng Lin (men's fencing) join Douglas as part of a team-high four men's athletes named Academic All-Area.
On the women's side, three Penn student-athletes were named to the 2019-20 Academic All-Area team in at-large sports. Junior
Julia Buchholz (women's squash), senior
Jessica Davis (women's squash) and sophomore
Mary Shin (women's golf) represent the Quakers.
