PHILADELPHIA – John Ceralde, the head women's gymnastics coach at the University of Pennsylvania, has resigned his position, the T. Gibbs Kane, Jr. W'69 Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. M. Grace Calhoun announced today.
"It has been an honor and privilege to work with some of the most talented and successful young women in the country," Ceralde said. "My 19 years at Penn can be culminated into two words -- Penn Passion. I have given my heart and soul to the program. I am happy I was able to help bring the Ivy trophy back home to where it belongs and am proud of this year's successes and hope for the continued success of the program! I want to thank everyone for their unwavering support and belief in me throughout my tenure at Penn."
"I want to thank John for his many years of service to Penn gymnastics," Calhoun said. "I wish him the best of luck in the next stage of his professional career."
Ceralde served Penn women's gymnastics for nearly two decades, including the past 14 years as its head coach. His teams won five Ivy Classic titles (2007, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2020) and two ECAC championships (2012, 2013). Nine gymnasts were NCAA individual qualifiers and seven were ECAC champions during Ceralde's tenure. He was Penn's assistant women's gymnastics coach from 2001-06 and was previously the head coach at Radford.
A search for the next head coach of Penn women's gymnastics will begin immediately.
