Baseball Defeated by FAU, 5-0

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team struggled offensively as the Quakers were dropped by FAU, 5-0 in the midweek series opener.

NOTES
*Owen Coady got the call for his first collegiate start. The highly touted freshman impressed, throwing four clean frames with no runs or hits allowed and four strikeouts.

*Brian Zeldin impressed in his debut for Penn. The freshman tossed two frames with two strikeouts and one hit allowed.

*Drake Eggleston made just his second collegiate appearance and stopped the bleeding with an inning-ending strikeout in the eighth.

*Eduardo Malinowski and Craig Larsen both tallied a pair of hits as they both went 2-for-4.

*Penn outhit FAU, 8-6.

*This marks the first time Penn was shutout since a 4-0 loss to Columbia in the season finale last year.

*The Quakers did not draw a single walk today. It is the first time Penn had failed to earn a freebie since that 4-0 loss to the lions last year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first six innings flew by, with both pitchers shutting down any offensive threats. In his first start of his collegiate career, Coady did not allow a single hit and struck out three batters. Infield errors put FAU on the doorstep twice, but the freshman did well to force outs, including three consecutive shallow pop flies with a runner on third in the first inning.

After four frames, Zeldin entered the game and continued to keep the Owls' bats quiet. FAU put a pair on in each of Zeldin's innings, but he did well under pressure to get the outs and eliminate the threat both times.

Unfortunately, the FAU bats came to life after the seventh inning stretch. With a runner on second, one out, and a 2-2 count, the host's Bobby Morgensen launched a two-run long ball to right center field. The hit was FAU's second of the game.

The Owls blanked Penn again in the top of the eighth then added to their lead in the bottom of the frame. A bases-loaded sac fly made it 3-0, then a two-run single added more insurance to make it 5-0.

Josh Hood led off with a single in the top of the ninth, but the Quakers' bats which followed could not bring him home.
