Gymnastics Captures Ivy Classic Championship

ITHACA, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania gymnastics team captured its 13th Ivy Classic championship and first since 2015 on Sunday with a season-best total of 194.850, the second-best score in program history.

Penn cruised to its title, pulling away from second-place Yale by more than a full point. The Bulldogs finished with 193.800, Brown placed third with 193.050 while the host Big Red rounded out the teams with a 192.975. The Quakers dominated throughout the day, earning the top score of the four Ivy teams on both vault and bars while putting up the second-best scores on beam and floor to pull away from the rest of the pack.

The Quakers excelled throughout the day, but especially on beam, combining for a 49.125, matching the best score in program history. All five of Penn's scorers hit at least a 9.750, led by Natalie Yang and Darby Nelson crushing a 9.875 apiece. Freshman McCaleigh Marr was next with a 9.825 and Darcy Matsuda and Sydney Kraex rounded out Penn's five with a 9.800 and 9.775, respectively. Overall, Nelson and Yang tied for second in the meet on the beam.

The Red and Blue almost touched 49 once more on floor, finishing with a team score of 48.875. Sydney Kraez soared above with a 9.900, the third-best score of the meet, and then Rebekah Lashley and Jordyn Mannino finished with a 9.850 and 9.825.

On vault, Penn beat the rest of the teams by a wide margin, racking up a score of 48.775, also matching the best score on that rotation in program history. The Quakers owned the second- and third-best scores of the day with Kraez leading the charge once more, scoring a 9.825 and then Rose Hoffman's 9.800 placed third.

Penn earned the highest score once more on bars, combining for a score of 48.075, more than two full tenths ahead of Brown and more than seven tenths ahead of the second-place Bulldogs. Mannino still finished third with a 9.675. Marr, who has dominated on bars all season, scored a 9.650 and then Libby Garfoot recorded a 9.625. Even with a total score of 48.075, all five scorers finished with at least a 9.550.
