Fifty-Point First Half Springs Sprint Football to Win at Post

WATERBURY, Conn. – The University of Pennsylvania sprint football team stayed hot as offense and defense combined to give the Quakers a 57-7 victory over Post.
 
The Quakers all but wrapped the game up with a first-half performance to remember, with Eddie Jenkins and Laquan McKever spurring the Penn offense to lead 5-0 after the first 30 minutes of play. The Quakers' defense played its part as well, holding the hosts to zero net yards (23 passing, -23 rushing) in the first half.
 
NOTES
*Jenkins totaled four touchdowns today—one passing, three rushing. His 14 touchdowns lead the league.
 
*Jenkins totaled 208 yards of offense, going 8-for-11 with 136 yards in the air and adding another 72 yards on seven rushes.
 
*McKever had a career game, totaling 16 rushes for 82 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the backfield. He added another touchdown, taking a screen pass to the house in the first quarter.
 
*The Quakers defense came up big again, stifling any offense Post attempted to create. Penn held the Eagles to 41 yards on 52 plays and pushed back Post, with the hosts going -56 yards on 21 rushes.
 
*Ben Klaus was Penn's top receiver today. The sophomore reeled in five receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown.
 
*Nine different Penn defenders tallied two or more tackles today. Freshman Lewis Evans led the Quakers with six total tackles.
 
*Both of freshman Matt Barkann's tackles today were tackles for loss. He, Aaron Johnson, and Jack Hennigan each totaled two tackles for loss.
 
*Penn's top pass defender, Luca Curran, snagged his first interception of the season today.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Yet another quick start for Penn gave the Quakers comfort after the first quarter. Jenkins started the scoring on the second play of the game, rushing it in after a 52-yard pass to Brendan McCaffrey put Penn on the Post one-yard line.
 
The Quakers the ball back after a three and out and quickly got their second score of the day. Jenkins connected with McKever on a screen pass which was taken 15 yards for the score. A fumble recovery by the Penn defense gave the offense the ball again in Post territory. McKever then got it done himself, going between the tackles for a seven-yard touchdown. Within the first ten minutes of play, Penn found itself with a 21-0 lead.
 
At the start of the second quarter, Jenkins and McKever drove the Penn offense deep into Post territory and McKever punched it in from one yard out for his third score of the day to give the Quakers a 28-0 lead.
 
The Quakers defense forced another three and out from the Eagles' offense. Michael Doulong put Penn in prime position to score, returning the punt 57 yards to the Post eight-yard line. On the drive's first play, Jenkins darted in to give Penn a 34-0 lead.
 
Another three and out forced by the Penn defense led to another punt which was again returned into Post territory. Sam Mintz got in on the action this time, rushing between the tackles for a 10-yard touchdown.
 
A high snap resulted in a safety against Post, giving Penn a 43-0 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half. Penn marched right down the field, going 42 yards in five plays, capped off by a 12-yard rushing touchdown for Eddie Jenkins to put Penn up, 50-0.
 
Penn took its foot off the pedal in the second half, showing its depth with several substitutions. The Quakers scored its final touchdown in the fourth quarter as Reed Connor connected with Ben Klaus for a 29-yard touchdown.
 
Post finally got on the board, ending Penn's shutout bid after an 11-yard rush midway through the fourth quarter. The game had already been put out of reach and the Quakers closed it out for a 57-7 victory in Connecticut.
 
UP NEXT
The Quakers look ahead to division play next weekend. Penn will welcome Philadelphia rivals Chestnut Hill to Franklin Field for a matchup next Saturday, October 5 with kickoff scheduled for noon.
