PHILADELPHIA – After closing out his collegiate career this spring,
Matt O'Neill will have the opportunity to take his talents to the next level as the four-year starter was selected by the New York Mets in the 20th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft.
O'Neill joins a group of five athletes from the University of Pennsylvania baseball program to be selected in the MLB Draft under W. Joseph Blood Head Coach
John Yurkow and the 14th Quaker drafted since 1991.
The Morristown, N.J. native closed out his collegiate career with his best season in a Penn uniform. O'Neill led the Ivy League with a .405 batting average and a .527 on-base percentage—sixth-best among Division I athletes this year. The Big 5 Player of the Year and unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection ranked second on the team with 64 hits and set a single-season program record with 40 walks this year.
