HOW IT HAPPENED
Duke took the lead in the bottom of the first inning after a double steal scored a Blue Devil baserunner from third. The home side extended the lead in the second after a two-run double down the left field line.
The Quakers clawed back in the top of the third. Freshman
Craig Larsen drew a four-pitch leadoff walk and Courtney reached first on a fielder's choice and an infield error. Adams then stepped up and smacked an RBI single to center to plate Larsen and put Courtney on third. A wild pitch on the next at-bat brought Courtney home to make it a one-run game.
The Blue Devils extended their lead to two after a sac fly in the bottom of the third, but Penn brought another runner home in the next frame to cut the deficit back to one. Duke punched back once again with a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth.
Guillory entered the game in the bottom of the fifth and shut down the Blue Devils' offense. He threw four scoreless frames with two strikeouts and only one hit allowed.
Penn took advantage of the offensive plateau with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. O'Neill and
Peter Matt each singled, and
Matt McGeagh walked to stuff the bases. Hood then hit a hard grounder to the second baseman who got McGeagh out at second but missed the throw to first allowing Matt to score just after O'Neill.
The Quakers tacked on another run in the seventh. Adams drew a leadoff walk with a full count and advanced to second, then third after a pair of groundouts. O'Neill drove in the tying run on a single up the middle.
Jacob Sadowitz took over for Guillory in the ninth. After walking the first batter, he put away the next three with two fly outs and a punch out to force Penn's second extra innings game this season.
The Quakers went three up, three down in the first half of the tenth. In the home half, DeVries replaced Sadowitz on the mound for his first collegiate appearance.
He walked two of his first three batters faced and hit a third with a pitch to stuff the bags with two outs. With a two-two count, he threw a fastball high and baited the Blue Devil batter into a whiff to give the Quakers another lifeline.
A trio of Penn freshmen worked together to give the Quakers their first lead of the season in the top of the 11th. Hood led off the Quakers with a single up the right side.
Craig Larsen advanced him to second on a sacrifice bunt. Courtney came to plate and hit his third RBI of the season down the right field line to bring Hood home.
DeVries started the bottom half of the inning by forcing a groundout to McGeagh at third. He walked the next batter in four pitches, then a Duke batter hit a single to left field. The next hitter, however, hit a hard grounder to Hood, who collected the ball, slid into second base, and threw to first to complete the double play and earn Penn its first win of the season.
