First-Half Run Dooms #8 Women's Lacrosse at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - It was a solid start for the No. 8 University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team Wednesday evening, with two goals scored and only one allowed in the first 10 minutes of play, but an 8-0 run from the second-ranked Maryland Terrapins midway through the first half was too much for the Quakers to recover from, as Penn dropped its first game of the season, 14-9. The Red and Blue now sit 6-1 overall and 1-0 in Ivy League.

PENN NEWS AND NOTES
*The Quakers outshot Maryland on the day, 26-23. Erin Barry was the key cog on offense for Penn, with nine shots of her own.

*Barry finished with a full stat sheet, recording four goals, four ground balls, three draw controls and four caused turnovers.

*Penn featured some success in turning the Terps over, as Abby Bosco tied Barry for the team lead, causing four turnovers.

*The Red and Blue were strong in their effort on the draw control, winning the category 16-9. Chelsea Kibler had a career-high seven DCs.

*Gabby Rosenzweig was the only other Quaker to record multiple goals, with two. She also had Penn's lone assist on the day.

*Mikaila Cheeseman and Krissy Kowalski each had two saves in goal for Penn.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Quakers scored on their first offensive possession following a Maryland turnover, tallying a goal from Laura Crawford for a 1-0 lead. Penn held the Terps scoreless for nearly the first nine minutes of play, forcing two turnovers in that span, before Maryland evened the score at 1-1.

Penn wasted no time in retaking the lead, with a quick draw control from Lauren O'Mara and score from Rosenzweig to put Penn back on top, 2-1. Unfortunately for the Quakers, that would be their last goal till the 6:04 mark of the first half.

Two shots on free position opportunities from Abby Bosco couldn't find their way into the back of the net, allowing Maryland to even the game, and just seconds later take its first lead at 3-2.

A Penn turnover led to another score for the Terps, who quickly regained possession on the draw control and in the blink of an eye, Penn was down 5-2. The Quakers had two more free position opportunities but were unable to convert, eventually leading to another pair of Maryland goals following a quick draw control.

Maryland's goalkeeper Megan Taylor was stout in net, saving a shot from Barry with 11:51 in the half, and the Terps would score two more, capitalizing on a Penn turnover for its second tally, to extend their lead to 9-2.

The Quakers would end the half with some momentum, scoring the period's final two goals on scores from Barry and Belodeau, while a Cheeseman save kept Maryland's goal total at nine.

Michaela McMahon tried to keep the scoring going for Penn, but another Taylor save followed by a free position goal for the Terps stymied the run, making the score 10-4.

The Terrapins would extend their lead to 13-5, with Barry the lone Quaker able to score in the early stages of the half, but Penn proved resilient, responding with a 3-0 run, featuring efficient offense with scores, followed by draw controls, and more scores, to force a Maryland timeout at 13-8.

Each team would score once more in the game, Penn's goal coming from the freshman Panzrella, with the Quakers either getting stopped at the goaline or turning it over, but buckling down on defense, resulting in the final 14-9 score.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Quakers will return home and round out a three-game swing of ranked opponents with a matchup against #15 Duke on Saturday, March 16 at 12:00 p.m. The game is part one of a doubleheader with the men's team with alumni weekend in full swing.
