COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The University of Pennsylvania gymnastics team earned a 195.075 on Sunday at Maryland's quad meet, the best score in the history of the program, to place second behind the host Terps and ahead of Brown and Southern Connecticut. Sunday's performance broke a 15-year-old record set on 3/12/2004 of 194.600.
On the afternoon, Penn racked up a season-high score on both the vault and the floor with a 48.675 and 48.975, respectively.
BARS
The Quakers started on the uneven bars and finished with a 48.600 behind another terrific routine from Allison Frommer with a 9.825. All five scorers finished with at least a 9.675 as Kellie Flavin (9.725) and Tara Mills (9.700) each eclipsed the 9.700 mark while Libby Garfoot and Rose Hoffman matched the score of 9.675.
BEAM
The balance beam has been a strong part all season for the Quakers and Sunday was no different. Once again, Caroline Moore and Natalie Yang led the way with a 9.850 and 9.800, respectively. All six competitors actually hit the 9.700 mark with Nicole Swirbalus and Darcy Matsuda coming in with a 9.750 and 9.725, respectively. Both Lauren Joost and Sydney Kraez each scored a 9.700 to round out the six.
FLOOR
When Penn moved to floor, the squad was in the midst of a solid day, but then quickly raised the level with a combined total of 48.975, the best this season. The top five all earned at least a 9.750 led by Kraez's 9.850 and a 9.800 from both Matsuda and Moore. The seniors came through in their penultimate regular season competition; in addition to Moore, Swirbalus garnered a 9.775 and the judges awarded Morgan Hunker with a 9.750.
VAULT
The Red and Blue kept the momentum up by moving to vault and setting the season high with a 48.675. Kraez led the way with a 9.800 and both Ava Caravela and Moore hit a 9.775 while Hoffman (9.700) and Valerie Rube (9.625) rounded out the scoring five.
WHAT'S NEXT?
On Friday, March 15, Penn is on the road in Williamsburg, Va. to take on William & Mary once more before heading into the ECAC Championships on Saturday, March 23.
