PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania gymnastics team once again rose above 193 for the fourth consecutive time, but finished third at the Ivy Classic on Sunday afternoon at The Palestra.
Caroline Moore led the way for the Quakers, earning Ivy Classic glory as the beam champion with a score of 9.875, tied for the fourth-best score of all-time. That score helped guide Penn to a combined score of 49.000 on beam, also tied for the fourth-best all-time.
BARS
The uneven bars epitomized Penn's day to a certain extent. There were some incredible routines as Allison Frommer and Libby Garfoot earned a 9.800 and 9.750, but the team's combined score was just 47.900, one of Penn's lowest through this stretch. Rose Hoffman also put together an impressive routine scoring a 9.675 and Caroline Mitsch tallied a 9.650.
BEAM
The highlight of the day came on beam when Penn enjoyed one of its best lineups in program history. The team combined for a score of 49.000, led by Moore's top score on the event. Freshman Natalie Yang wasn't far behind with a career-high 9.850 and senior Nicole Swirbalus also rose above a 9.825. To round out the top five, Lauren Joost earned a 9.750 and Darcy Matsuda hit a 9.700.
FLOOR
Penn kept the momentum rolling on floor by scoring a 48.625. Jordyn Mannino continued her terrific sophomore season with a 9.800 to lead the Quakers and Swirbalus scored a 9.750. Sydney Kraez, another freshman, scored a 9.725 while Moore and Morgan Hunker, two seniors in the final meet at The Palestra, garnered a 9.675.
VAULT
Entering the vault, Penn was right in contention but came up with a combined score of 47.575. Joost led off with a 9.700 and then Valerie Rube put together another terrific vault, taking her second consecutive 9.775. Ava Caravela, also another freshman, scored a 9.750 and Kraez and Hoffman rounded out the team with a 9.200 and 9.150.
WHAT'S NEXT
On Friday, Penn will travel west to Southeast Missouri on Friday before competing at Lindenwood on Sunday.
