PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's squash team (2-1, 0-0) suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to #4 Stanford (1-0) on Friday afternoon. The Quakers electric comeback attempt ended just short, after falling behind 3-0 and 4-2.
Right out the gate, the Quakers fell into an early hole, dropping the first three matches to the Cardinal. Despite a quick start from freshmen
Euwie Park and
Navmi Sharma, the Cardinal shook off the early rust to take the edge.
However, the mood began to change, when
Jamila Abou El Enin shook off a first game loss to her opponent and won the second game 11-9. The momentum swung even further in the Quakers favor, when Abou El Enin recorded a thrilling third game win and used that momentum to roll in fourth game for the first Penn point of the afternoon.
Her sister
Amina Abou El Enin carried that positive momentum into her match, fighting back in a similar manner. After a first game loss, she won three tight games (11-8, 11-9, 11-8) to keep her undefeated collegiate record intact.
Ashley Manning and
Haley Scott battled hard to tie the matchup after the Quakers fell behind 4-2. Scott was down 2-1, while Manning was tied at 1-1. However, an electric crowd willed them back in the match, with Manning winning in four games and
Haley Scott rolling 11-5, 11-8 in the final two games to tie it at 4-4. However, the Cardinal were able to edge out a victory, thanks to a win from Elena Wagenmans in the #1 matchup of the day.
