NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of Pennsylvania gymnastics team unleashed eight scores of at least 9.700 but the Quakers fell to Yale on the road on Saturday, 193.775-192.350 in their first dual meet of the 2019 season.
BARS
Last weekend at Maryland's quad meet, the uneven bars were the worst rotation of the afternoon, but on Saturday, Penn came through and finished with a combined score of 48.200. Rose Hoffman led off for the Quakers with a 9.400 and then the next four scorers all delivered performances deserving of at least 9.650. Libby Garfoot was next with a 9.650, then Caroline Mitch let loose a 9.700. To close out the rotation, Allison Frommer scored a 9.775 and Jordyn Mannino earned a 9.675.
VAULT
Penn moved to vault and earned similar scores, finishing with a combined score of 48.100. Freshman Sydney Kraez delighted the judges with Penn's top score of the afternoon and the best of anyone on the vault with a 9.825. Another freshman, Ava Caravela, scored a 9.700, the second-best Penn score and then senior Caroline Moore earned a 9.650. To round out the top five, Lauren Joost recorded a 9.475 and Valerie Rube a 9.450.
FLOOR
The floor was another spot for improvement from Maryland, and the Quakers did just that, making it their top event of the afternoon. Mannino led the way with a 9.800, Kraez scored a 9.700, Nicole Swirbalus earned a 9.650 and Moore managed a 9.625. Morgan Hunker rounded out the scorers with a 9.600.
BEAM
The Quakers excelled on the beam at Maryland, recording the best team score of the meet, but finished with a 47.675 on Saturday. Freshman Natalie Yang, who enjoyed a tremendous performance last weekend in her collegiate debut, followed it up with a 9.825. Swirbalus was next with a 9.725 while Darcy Matsuda (9.575), Natalie Borden (9.425) and Moore (9.125) rounded out the competition.
WHAT'S NEXT
Penn travels to city rival Temple next Sunday, Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. to compete with the Owls, Ithaca and Ursinus.
