PHILADELPHIA - For the first time in program history, the University of Pennsylvania men's squash team (8-0, 1-0 Ivy) has topped the College Squash Association rankings. The Quakers defeated Yale, 7-2, last weekend on the road for the first time since 2006 and jumped Columbia, Harvard, and Trinity for the nation's top spot.
"It's a great honor to be number one this week. The boys have worked extremely hard this year. We've gotten off to a great start, winning some tough matches in some really tough places," said head coach
Gilly Lane. "While it's great to be recognized as the number one team this week, we still know we have a ton of work to do and plenty of big matches ahead of us. We just have to go back to the drawing board and continue to do what we're doing on a daily basis and push harder to make sure that we continue to have the success that we've had this season."
The Quakers are just one of two teams in college squash that are undefeated this season and lead the top-10 with eight wins overall. With Penn's win over Yale last week, it marked the Red and Blue's fourth top-10 win this season which also leads college squash.
For Penn, it has been the trio of freshmen Aly
Abou Eleinen,
James Flynn, and Michael
Mehl who have impressed early on in their collegiate careers. The trio are all undefeated with six of Flynn's wins coming via sweep.
Also undefeated are
Yash Bhargava,
Karim Hussein, and Jonathan
Zeitels. Each have provided the Red and Blue with experienced depth.
At the Quakers' number one slot,
Andrew Douglas, an All-American last year as a freshman, has put together a 6-2 record.
The Red and Blue have played their last four matches on the road, but return back to Philadelphia next week for a clash with No. 4 Trinity and Colby.
