COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Caroline Moore unleashed a score of 9.800 to win the beam as the University of Pennsylvania finished third on Sunday at Maryland to open the 2019 season.
The host Terrapins won the competition with a score of 193.850, West Chester edged the Quakers with a 190.650 and Penn concluded the afternoon with 190.550, ahead of Cortland.
BARS
Penn began the competition on the uneven bars and earned quality performances from both Allison Frommer and Kellie Flavin, who busted out scores of 9.700 and 9.650, respectively. Caroline Mitsch finished with a 9.325; Tara Mills earned a 9.275; and Jordyn Mannino used a 9.000 to give Penn a combined score of 46.950.
BEAM
The Quakers then moved to the beam and ripped off their best performances of the entire afternoon. Their final score of 48.500 was the best of all four teams and Moore's 9.800 beat the rest of the field. Freshman Natalie Yang had the second-best score of anyone with a 9.775 as all five Quakers earned at least a 9.575 on the beam. Darcy Matsuda garnered a 9.675, Nicole Swirbalus had the same score and Lauren Joost rounded out the five with a 9.575 in her collegiate debut.
FLOOR
The level dipped a little from the beam to the floor as Penn finished with a 47.075, led by Mannino's and Ava Caravela's 9.675 scores. Morgan Hunker finished with a 9.550, Swirbalus earned a 9.325 and Matsuda rounded out the team with a 8.725.
VAULT
However, the Quakers finished strong on the vault, upping their combined score into the 48-point range again with a 48.025. Caravela led with a 9.725 in a quality performance in her first college competition. Her score was tied for the fourth best of anyone. Captain Valerie Rube scored a 9.650, Moore earned a 9.625, freshman Sydney Kraez scored a 9.525 and Swirbalus had a 9.500 for a quality rotation for Penn.
Penn is back on the road next weekend in New Haven, Conn. to take on Yale on Saturday. The first rotation is set for 1 p.m.
