Men's Soccer Settles for Scoreless Draw Against Drexel

PHILADELPHIA - While it had its chances, the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team couldn't find the back of the net on Monday night in the University City Derby. Luckily, the Quakers didn't concede a goal either, resulting in a 0-0 double-overtime draw against neighborly Philadelphia Soccer Six rival Drexel. With the result, Penn sits at 1-0-1 after its opening weekend of play.

PENN NOTES
*The Quakers dominated the stat sheet throughout the vast majority of the contest, finishing with 18 shots to Drexel's 10, and 12 corner kicks to Drexel's five.

*Penn earned 12 corners on the night, its highest total since tallying 16 against Saint Joseph's nearly three years ago, on September 29, 2015.

*Six Quakers played the entire 110 minutes of double overtime, including Scott Forbes, Casey Barone, Erumuse Momoh, Alex Touche, Brandon Bartel and RC Williams

*A trio of underclassmen led the team in shots, as Joey Bhangdia, Alex Touche and Ben Stitz each landed three.

*The shutout for Scott Forbes is the third of his career, two of which have come against Drexel. The senior finished with four saves, including two in the final 90 seconds of play to prevent the Dragons from netting a golden-goal winner.

*With the result, Penn is now 31-11-2 all-time against the Dragons. The two sides tied a game for just the second time ever and first since 1967.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a slow start for both sides in terms of tempo, with play primarily being conducted in the midfield. The Dragons had several opportunities early on free kicks following Penn fouls, with nothing to show for it. The Quakers were the first to test their luck at the goal, with Brandon Bartel shooting wide left in the eighth minute of play.

Drexel's first shot came in the 18th minute, as Mathias Ebbesen headed in a ball to the top center of the box, but Forbes proved up to the challenge, leaping above to swipe the ball over the crossbar.

Penn ended the half as the aggressor, earning four corner kicks in the final six minutes of play, but was unable to find any breathing room in the box, as shots by Bhangdia, Touche and Anthony Rovito were all blocked by Drexel defenders.

The Quakers had their best chance of the night to begin the second half, as freshman Stitz found himself with a clear look at goal, striking a ball hard against the crossbar. The rookie continued to knock on the door with two more shots in the coming minutes, forcing a save from Drexel's netminder.

Penn avoided any real Drexel threat to end regulation, and failed to convert the chances it had. The first overtime period featured two shots from Penn and another from Drexel, but high drama came in the second overtime period. With time winding down, Drexel found itself with two corner kicks, helping tilt the field in favor of the Dragons. Ebbesen nearly sent the visitors away with a win twice in the final two minutes, squaring off two shots on goal, before Forbes made a final stand to preserve the shutout for the Red and Blue.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Quakers are set to travel to Wisconsin for a pair of games, first facing Marquette on Friday, Sept. 7, before battling Milwaukee on Sunday, Sept. 9.
