Late Yale Rally Dooms Baseball in Series Opener, 4-3

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - After surging to a late lead during a three-run seventh, Penn (14-25-1, 7-11-1 Ivy) was unable to put away league-front runner Yale (22-17, 15-4 Ivy) over the final three frames, eventually falling to the Bulldogs on an 11th-inning walk-off single by Yale's Tim DeGraw. Quakers' starter Gabe Kleiman tossed a magnificent final game donning the Red & Blue, striking out six while containing a potent Yale offense to just two runs on eight hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs jumped out to a quick lead behind a first-inning RBI from Griffin Dey, earning a one-run advantage that Yale would hold onto for a majority of the game. Despite the Penn lineup setting up scoring opportunities throughout the game, it wasn't until the seventh that the Quakers' efforts bore fruit. Freshman Eduardo Malinowski -- who improved his hit streak to 10 consecutive games -- got things started with an RBI single, knotting the score at one apiece. The power-hitting junior duo of Sean Phelan and Matt McGeagh lived up to their statistical prowess during the next two at-bats, each picking up an RBI off a sacrifice fly and a single, respectively.

Yale closed the gap with one run in the bottom of the seventh, eventually forcing the Quakers to open up the bullpen heading into the eighth frame. Sophomore closer Dylan Mulvihill aptly handled five consecutive outs over the final two innings, but back-to-back walks followed by back-to-back hit-by-pitch granted the Bulldogs a tie game. Following an uneventful 10th on both sides, Yale completed the rally an inning later with a walk-off single.

Kleiman, who has been the anchor of the Penn pitching rotation all season, composed a strong performance in what will serve as his final outing as a Quaker. The senior managed to contain an aggressive Yale attack, escaping multiple innings off late pop-ups or induced double plays. Sophomores Mulvihill and Jacob Sadowitz ran the final three and one-third frames, surrendering two runs off four hits with four strikeouts.
