Baseball Edged in Home Finale with Cornell, 7-6

PHILADELPHIA - After holding the lead nearly the entire game, Penn (12-21-1, 6-8-1 Ivy) suffered a late loss as Cornell (8-17-1, 4-8 Ivy) drove in a combined seven runs across the seventh and eighth frames to clinch the weekend series. The Quakers' offense put together a quick 3-0 advantage off the bat of freshman Eduardo Malinowski -- back-to-back home runs, the first of his career, and three RBIs -- but Penn's relief pitching could not stop a late Big Red surge.

HOW IT HAPPENED
As a freshman, Malinowski has impressed from day one, taking over a spot in the top of the line-up early and maintaining production throughout the season. The Texas native hit a few milestones Sunday afternoon at Meiklejohn Stadium as he jacked a pair of home runs on his first two at-bats. The first inning began with sophomore Chris Adams reaching base on a hit-by-pitch, and then Malinowski shook things up as he roped a pitch just inside the left-field foul pole, his first career home run as a Quaker. An encore performance came in the third, as the freshman placed a two-out pitch in nearly the same location for a solo homer and a 3-0 lead on Cornell.

Both Adams and Malinowski played a role in extending the Quakers' advantage in the sixth, as excellent base-running from the latter set up the pair on second and third with no outs. Junior Sean Phelan singled to score Adams before fellow junior Matt McGeagh hit into a double play that knocked in Malinowski, pushing Penn out to a five-run edge.

Cornell stormed back, taking advantage as the Quakers went to their bullpen in the seventh. The Big Red drove in four runs that frame and another three in the eighth to take a 7-5 lead.

Penn loaded the bases with just one out into the eighth, setting up sophomore Peter Matt who plated one on an infield sacrifice. However, the Quakers were unable to reclaim the lead, eventually falling 7-6.

On the mound, sophomore Mitchell Holcomb had another stellar performance, tossing a six-frame shutout with just four hits and eight strikeouts. Relievers Robby Cerulle and Jacob Sadowitz surrendered the seven runs that pushed Cornell out in front, before junior Grant Guillory closed out the game by allowing one hit and no runs in the ninth. The Big Red utilized starter Tommy Morris through five and two-thirds frames before Austin Wahl and Andrew Ellison took over, with the latter holding the Quakers to just two hits and one run during the final three innings.
