PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team was pushed for most of the first half by a game and aggressive Columbia squad that came into Saturday's game at Franklin Field having won its last two Ivy League contests.
Â
Once the ninth-ranked Quakers got rolling, though, there was nothing the Lions could to stop them. Penn held Columbia scoreless for the final 7:25 of the first half and all of the second half, all while scoring 13 goals themselves to win, 19-4.
Â
It was only 6-4 when Columbia's Fallon Quinn scored an unassisted goal with 7:25 left in the first half, the second-straight goal by the Lions after Lindsey Ewertsen had notched her second of the day a little more than two minutes later.
Â
Penn needed a few minutes to make those goals up,
Erin Barry—who was all over the place on Saturday—scoring her third of the day with 5:08 to play in the period and then
Caroline Cummings finishing a
Zoe Belodeau feed just 42 seconds later to make it 8-4 at the half.
Â
Whatever head coach Karin Brower Corbett said at halftime, bottle it.
Â
Alex Condon scored the first two goals out of the break, making it 10-4 before the period was two minutes old. Barry notched another exactly three minutes into the half, and
Gabby Rosenzweig followed up just 2:12 after that. The rout was on from there, as nine different Penn players scored in the game.
Â
Barry finished the day with five goals and six points while also picking up four draw controls. Belodeau had five assists and a team-high eight draw controls, while Rosenzweig had five points (2g, 3a) and Cummings (3g, 1a) and Condon (4g) had four each. For Rosenzweig and Cummings, those point totals pushed them into triple digits for their careers.
Â
At the other end,
Mikaila Cheeseman had six saves over the first 50 minutes before handing things over to
Maggie Smith who was uncalled upon over the final 10 minutes.
