Baseball Falls Short at Monmouth, 3-1

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Despite grabbing an early lead and holding the opposing batting order to just three hits, Penn (8-18-1, 3-5-1 Ivy) suffered a close 3-1 loss to Monmouth (9-18, 3-6 MAAC) Tuesday afternoon. HOW IT HAPPENED
Similar to last Wednesday's midweek victory over Villanova, the Penn pitching staff proved to be the story against Monmouth, containing the Hawks' batters to just three hits on the day. Freshman Brendan Bean, who earned his first career start last week against the Wildcats, put together another solid performance through three innings, walking two and striking out five. Senior Jordan Della Valle took over in the fourth frame, throwing for an inning and one-third before freshman Cole Sichley, junior Grant Guillory and sophomore Dylan Mulvihill closed out the final three and two-thirds. The group combined for three strikeouts and two hits.

At the plate, the Quakers jumped out to a third-inning lead off the bat of junior Sean Phelan, who scored freshman Christian Walton by reaching on an error credited to the Hawks' second baseman. From that point on, the offense consistently placed runners in position but never drove them home, leaving seven on base. The Monmouth attack came alive in the fifth frame, as a fielder's choice plated the tying run. A two-RBI single in the sixth pushed the Hawks in front, and they locked up the lead for the remainder of the game.

Monmouth starter Tyler Ksiazek powered his way through five innings, surrendering four hits and one run. Relievers Ryan Steckline and Ryan Lillie handled the final four frames, giving up just one hit late as they earned the win and save, respectively.
