PHILADELPHIA - Following a tight loss in yesterday's home opener, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team (6-15-1, 2-3-1 Ivy) rallied from down three runs in a pair of doubleheader matchups against Dartmouth (5-13-1, 1-1-1 Ivy), notching an 8-7 victory through 11 innings in the first of Sunday's two games before, once again, battling back for a 4-4 tie in the second game when darkness forced the game to end. The Quakers received late offensive sparks during both games, as junior
Sean Phelan sealed the opening game with a walk-off sacrifice fly while fellow junior
Matt McGeagh jacked a two-run homer in the ninth of the back end to knot the score at four apiece and force extra frames.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
After Penn opened the scoring when sophomore
Chris Adams came home on a passed ball in the opening frame, the Dartmouth offense jumped into action with runs in the second, sixth and seventh innings to grab a 4-1 advantage. The Quakers battled back with a strong showing in the seventh frame, as freshman
Kyle Cronk earned his first career RBIs by knocking in senior
Daniel Halevy and junior
Matt O'Neill, slicing the lead down to one. Dartmouth's response came in the form of a two-run shot over the left-field wall an inning later, but Penn refused to go away, with a Halevy sacrifice fly and a McGeagh double pulling the Quakers, once again, within one score.
Unlike yesterday's one-run deficit in the final frame, Penn's prayers were answered as freshman
Eduardo Malinowski singled into right field to plate sophomore
Peter Matt, forcing extra innings and denying the Big Green a potential sweep. The 10th inning saw a pair of home runs -- one from each side -- with Halevy sending a deep ball over the left-field fence to insure an 11th frame. After relief pitching held off Dartmouth from retaking the lead, Adams found his way to third base on a hit-by-pitch and Malinowski single, setting up Phelan's arching shot to the left-center which brought Adams home with the walk-off run.
On the mound, sophomore starter
Mitchell Holcomb managed five innings of work and allowed just three hits, four walks and three strikeouts, containing the Big Green offense consistently. The freshman duo of
Robby Cerulle and
Brendan Bean handled a frame apiece, surrendering no hits along the way. Junior
Grant Guillory and sophomore
Jacob Sadowitz closed out the game with two innings each, combining to allow five hits, three runs and three strikeouts.
GAME TWO
Following the explosive offense of the front-end matchup, the second game proved much more defensive for both squads. Similar to the opener, though, Dartmouth played with the lead nearly the entire game, breaking off three runs in the first two frames for the early edge. The Quakers responded with a score in the sixth inning, as a Phelan single escorted senior
Andrew Murnane home. The Big Green reclaimed the three-run advantage in the ninth.
Penn had another rally ready. Halevy powered a single into center field to send O'Neill home, before McGeagh blasted a pitch over the left-field wall to knot the game at 4-4.
With darkness creeping in on Meiklejohn Stadium, the game only managed to continue for two extra innings before a tie was declared.
Sophomore
Christian Scafidi completed six and one third frames in the tie, allowing seven hits with three runs and four strikeouts, before handing the reins to junior
John Alan Kendrick. The southpaw contained Dartmouth for two and a third frames before sophomore
Dylan Mulvihill took over late in the ninth, earning one out in the final frame (on one pitch) and another three in the 10th. Freshman
Cole Sichley continued the domination through the 11th, giving up no hits with one strikeout to close out Dartmouth.
NEXT UP
The Quakers turn their attention to visiting Villanova, as the Wildcats come to Meiklejohn Stadium for a Tuesday matchup as part of the Liberty Bell Classic.
