GREENVILLE, S.C. - The second matchup between Penn and Furman was seemingly unrecognizable following Tuesday's offensive showcase, where the two squads combined for 16 runs, as top-tier pitching and strong fielding played a much more dominant role. Despite the success of the Quaker defense, though, the Paladins still managed to put together a victory, finishing the two-game sweep with a 4-1 mark.
Furman 4, Penn 1
WP: Nik Verbeke (3-1)
LP: Gabe Kleiman (0-1)
SV: Tyler Kimbrell (1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
After yesterday's success playing with a lead, Furman (8-5, 0-0 SoCon) sought to duplicate its results starting with the first frame, as the Paladins pushed a single runner across for an early advantage. The Furman offense would extend their edge with a pair of runs in the fifth and another in the sixth before Penn (1-7, 0-0 Ivy) responded with its lone score in the seventh as freshman DH
Brendan Bean plated senior
Andrew Murnane with a single into left field.Â
Penn starter
Gabe Kleiman, with a solid defense behind him, pitched through five innings, allowing 10 hits and three runs. Freshman
Robby Cerulle and sophomore Jake Sadowitz each pitched an inning of relief each before junior
Grant Guillory closed out the game in the eighth. Meanwhile, Furman ace Nik Verbeke surrendered just six hits through seven innings of work before Tyler Kimbrell earned the save in the final two frames.
