Women's Squash Avenges Loss Against Columbia, Advances to Consolation Final

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The University of Pennsylvania women's squash team avenged their loss on senior day against Columbia on Saturday as they defeated the Lions, 6-3. The Quakers got wins from their top-four, as well as five and six, to move on to the consolation final. Penn will play Stanford at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

How it Happened

It was less than a week ago that the Quakers fell to Columbia in narrow 5-4 fashion at Ringe on senior day. Losing to Princeton to open up the Howe Cup, Penn was then set to play the same Lions in the consolation bracket and would need a win if they were to make some noise at the National Team Championships.

In the first meeting between the two squads, Penn earned wins at their top-three as well as at number six from Julia Buchholz. However, it was not enough as they came up short.

Not wanting to go out of the Howe Cup without a fight and with the return of freshman Cameron Munn in the back of the lineup, Penn flipped the previous result, earning the 6-3 win.

As per usual, it was Penn's top-3 that shined. Reeham Salah and Marie Stephan each swept to win 3-0, while Alves won in four instead of five like last week.

After getting swept at Ringe on Sunday, it looked like it was going the same way for Haley Scott. The freshman lost the opening two games, including the second 11-2, making it five straight games for Jui Kalgutkar. That's when everything changed for Scott.

She took the next game 11-6 and then toughed out a 13-11 fourth game to force a fifth. After winning the fourth, the match was far from over and Scott's experience playing four all season showed as she won the decider 11-9 to get a much needed win for the Quakers.

Returning to the line-up, Cameron Munn pulled off a five game win of her own. After losing the opener, 11-9, Munn pulled out the next two 11-4, 11-7 and looked to have all of the momentum. The freshman lost the fourth in difficult 12-10 fashion, but bounced back admirably as she toughed out the fifth, 11-8.
