Did You Know?
From 1895-1924 a baseball field was positioned in the north east corner of the stadium and was home to the Penn Baseball team during that time. 
Verdi's Aida Opera was performed in 1916.
During World War I Franklin Field was used as a training location for military units.
In 1936 Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered his acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination for the presidency while attending the Democratic National Convention at Franklin Field.
The infamous booing of Santa Claus, which gave Philadelphia fans a bad rap, took place during the Philadelphia Eagles & Minnesota Vikings game on December 15, 1968.
In 1969 the grass field was switched to AstroTurff.
Pele & the New York Cosmos took on the Philadelphia Atoms on Franklin Field in 1976.
The Liberty Bell Classic provided track and field athletes from 26 countries the opportunity to compete while boycotting the 1980 Olympic games in Moscow.
In 1997 U2 played Franklin Field.
In 2002 Franklin Field hosted ESPN's College GameDay prior to the Penn-Harvard football game.


Commencement

Since 1986 The University of Pennsylvania has held Commencement Ceremonies at Franklin Field. Commencement has brought famous speakers to Franklin Field including Barbara Bush (1990), Ted Koppel (1991), Hillary Rodham Clinton (1993), Tom Brokaw (1996), Jimmy Carter (1998), Seamus Heaney (2000), John McCain (2001), Archbishop Desmon Tutu (2003), Bono (2004), Jodie Foster (2006), Denzel Washington (2011), Joseph R. Biden Jr. (2013), John Legend C'99 (2014) and Andrea Mitchell, CW '67 (2018).

Movies

In 2000 director M. Night Shyamalan utilized Franklin Field in the filming of Unbreakable, where Bruce Willis plays a security guard at the stadium.  In 2006 Disney's Invincible utilized Franklin Field as a stand-in for Veterans Stadium.
