Aly Abou Eleinen Wins Junior US Open

PHILADELPHIA - University of Pennsylvania men's squash freshman, Aly Abou Eleinen continued his successful rookie campaign on Tuesday after winning the US Junior Open. Eleinen defeated Aly Hussein in a five-game classic, 11-7,12-10,7-11,5-11,11-7.

"It feels amazing," said Abou Eleinen. "I'm glad that all of the hard work finally paid off. I have so many people to thank and I'm forever grateful for all the support from Penn, family, and friends. This was my last juniors tournament and it feels great that I ended it on a high note. I'm excited for what's ahead."

Said men's squash head coach Gilly Lane, "This is an incredible achievement for Aly. Winning the 2018 US Junior Open speaks to his determination, dedication, talent, and love for the game. The US Junior Open brings in the best talent from all over the world and after winning this tournament he ends his junior career as a champion. We are so fortunate that he is a student athlete for Penn as he represents everything that Penn stands for."

The US Squash Junior Open brings together 900 junior squash players representing forty-one different nations together in Boston to compete in the world's largest individual squash tournament. Abou Eleinen made his way through the 127 player U19 draw winning seven straight matches en route to the title. He won his first three matches via sweep before prevailing in his first five-game match of the tournament. Abou Eleinen took his next two matches in four games before defeating Hussein 11-7 in the fifth.

The Penn freshman has played a large role in the Quakers' 6-0 start. Abou Eleinen is 6-0 while playing at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots that included two, five-game wins against George Washington and St. Lawrence.

Men's squash will leave for their trip to Europe later this month and then get back into action on January 12 at Yale.
