Men's Squash Sweeps Virginia, Improves to 4-0

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men's squash team (4-0) remained undefeated on the year after defeating no. 13 Virginia, 9-0, at the Kline and Specter Squash Center. Virginia came in having defeated no. 8 Princeton last week, but it was the Quakers who used momentum from early matches to run away with the win.

How it Happened

The Quakers swept five of their nine wins on Sunday, but all five came in the second shift. In the early goings, Penn faced a lot of adversity, but came through, setting the tone for later on. Wil Hagen lost the first game of his match while David Yacobucci split the first two games in his. Hagen turned things around in the second and pulled through in a tight third game to win 13-11 to go up 2-1 and then closed his match out with an 11-7 fourth game victory. Yacobucci took the third game 11-5, to go up 2-1 and like Hagen came through in a tight fourth, 14-12, to win 3-1.

In the other two early matches, it was the two Canadian freshmen who came away with victories. Both Michael Mehl and James Flynn went up 2-0, but lost the third to see their leads shrink to 2-1. While Flynn bounced back from an 11-9 loss in the third game to win the fourth 11-3, closing out his match, Mehl lost the fourth and would head to a fifth. The freshman fought off match balls, but came through 14-12 in the fifth to give Penn a big 4-0 lead early.

The second shift of matches were much less dramatic. Jonathan Zeitels earned the fifth point for the Quakers as the team captain won three games by the score of 11-6 to win 3-0. Aly Abou Eleinen who won a five-game thriller the day before came through 11-7,11-6,11-7.

At number one, Andrew Douglas lost just seven points en route to a 11-3,11-0,11-4.

What's Next

The Quakers begin the season 4-0 for the second straight year. Penn will be back in action on December 1 when it heads to New York to play St. Lawrence and Rochester.
