BOSTON – The University of Pennsylvania rowing teams competed at the Head of the Charles over the weekend, with the three crews putting out a total of nine boats across seven divisions. Two of the three women's crews in the race went on Saturday, with the third going on Sunday. The heavyweight and lightweight men's programs both had three boats race on Sunday.
The Head of the Charles is a three-mile, head-style regatta.
Women's Club 4+
Competed on Saturday, the women took fourth out of 52 boats in 18:56.927. Marist was first in the division, followed by Tennessee and Dartmouth and then the Quakers.
Women's Club 8+
Penn had a bittersweet Saturday, experiencing a great high and a very tough low. The team had a strong second half of the race to finish with the second-fastest overall time (17:09.771) and for a couple of hours good feelings were flowing until the regatta notified the Penn coaching staff that the crew would be excluded.
"I made a mistake in overlooking the Club 8+ eligibility rules concerning Henley Women's Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta," said Penn's head coach,
Wesley Ng. "One of our athletes had raced at both British regattas this summer for her home club, and I missed that her participation would exclude her from the Club level. We had held out two athletes who had won Royal Canadian Henley this past summer, but I missed this one. It's gutting as a coach to know that you've negatively impacted your own crew when you see the concentration and hard work they put in on a daily basis, and I have to own that mistake. I also want to apologize to the regatta and our direct competitors who had their moment of joy in racing impacted by my mistake."
Men's Championship 4+
Penn was 14th out of 18 boats in this division, clocking 18:51.740. KNRB was the division's winner, followed by USRowing. Brown was third, tops among college programs.
Men's Lightweight 4+ (2 boats)
Penn's lightweights had two boats compete in the 16-boat division, and the Quakers took third (17:55.926) and seventh (18:27.178). Georgetown won the division, with Cornell second and Penn third.
Men's Championship 8+ (2 boats)
Penn's heavyweights had two boats in this 32-boat division, and the Quakers took 23rd (16:06.004) and 27th (16:27.560). USRowing won the division, with Yale taking top honors among the colleges.
Men's Lightweight 8+
Penn's boat was clocked in at 16:11.392 and took fifth out of 14 boats in the division. Cornell was the division winner.
Women's Championship 8+
