HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team was quick to find its footing in the early stages of the match, as both squads spent most of their time in the midfield following a quick Yale attack in the opening minute.
Amado Lozano launched Penn's first two shots of the day, sending balls in from right outside the penalty box in the 18th and 24th minutes.
The Bulldogs would strike first, playing a ball deep near the end line before connecting across the goal and finding Kyle Kenagy on the far post, who slotted the ball past Forbes.
Yale would continue to assert itself following its scoring play, but Penn was dealt several chances in the waning minutes of the first half, as the Bulldogs committed several fouls in their defensive end. Penn's best chance came on a familiar play, as
Brandon Bartel constructed a set piece, finding the head of
Alex Touche who rocketed a shot just wide of the goal. The Red and Blue would survive several corner kick chances from the home team late in the period, down 1-0.
The second half saw Penn make a concerted effort to make their offensive possessions more dangerous, as the Quakers were able to maintain more of the ball near the Bulldogs' penalty box.
After routine subbing on the front line, the Quakers were able to break through. The fouls in the midfield that allowed multiple Penn opportunities came back to haunt the Bulldogs, as Bartel set up just past the midfield line in the 84th minute. The junior captain sent the ball on target, deflecting off the hands of the Yale goalkeeper and landing in front of the feet of Kohlbrenner. Kohlbrenner organized himself and shot the ball past several Yale defenders into the back of the net to equalize the game.
As the match went into overtime, Yale pushed itself forward as the aggressor, earning several chances in the early portions of extra time. Forbes collected four saves in the first overtime period alone. The second overtime period was much tamer, with one shot total, coming from Bartel.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Quakers conclude their three-match road swing with a Philadelphia Soccer Six bout on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Temple.
