Philadelphia - After back-to-back wins to cap off the George Mason Invitational last week, the University of Pennsylvania women's volleyball team (3-1) looked to carry that momentum into their first home tournament, The Valley Forge Sports Invitational. The Red and Blue did just that on Friday night as they swept the Siena Saints (0-5) 3-0 (25-12, 25-15, 25-21) giving them a win in their first game at The Palestra this season.
Inside The Numbers
*The Quakers out-hit the Saints by a wide margin, dominating the stat throughout the night. Penn ended with an impressive hit percentage of .372 while the Siena finished with just a .034.
* Once again it was
Parker Jones leading the way for the Quakers. After winning Ivy Leage Rookie of the Week and finishing on the George Mason Invitational all-tournament team, Jones continued her strong play at home. The freshman from California lead the Quakers in kills with 11 capping off a double-double in which she also had 13 digs.
*Senior
Kendall Covington, who also made the all-tournament team last week, continued to play well. Covington hit .438 with eight kills on the night.
Hayley Molnar and
Brooke Behrbaum also had strong evenings hitting six kills and .455 and .625 respectively.
*
Sydney Morton may not show up on the stat-sheet very often when it comes to kills, however, she is always setting up her teammates for success. The senior once again had a strong night in assists finishing with 30.
How it Happened
Coming into Friday's match against Siena, the Quakers were off back-to-back wins against Central Michigan and George Mason. The Red and Blue continued to build off those wins as they came in right where they left off. Tied at 5-5, the Quakers went on an 8-0 run sparked by a kill by Jones to take a 13-5 lead. Set up by Morton, Covington hit a kill to cap off the dominant first set 25-12.
While the second set started close with the Quakers up just 15-14, the Saints started to make errors and Penn took advantage. Two kills each from Jones and Behrbaum lead Penn on an 10-1 run to close out the second set 25-15 and take a two set to none lead.
The Saints however would not go away easy and the Quakers found themselves down 11-17 midway through the third set. Coach
Katie Schumacher-Cawley called a timeout and that gave her team the wake-up call they needed. Behrbaum got aggressive at the net, getting involved on two blocks that lead to points and with a kill from Molnar, the Quakers took their first lead since 4-3 in the set. A kill from Covington put the Quakers up once again at 21-20 and they never looked back. The Red and Blue rattled off four of the next five points and with a block by Covington and Parker, they completed the sweep.
What's Next
