Baseball Named Big 5 Team of the Year; Yurkow, Graul Highlight Major Awards

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania baseball team was named the 2017 Philadelphia Big 5 team of the year Thursday after capturing the program's fourth Gehrig Division title and a trip to the Ivy League Championship Series for the first time since 2007.

Head coach John Yurkow was named Big 5 Coach of the Year for the second time in his four seasons at the helm of the Quakers, while senior outfielder Tim Graul was awarded Player of the Year honors. Sophomore third baseman Matt McGeagh was named Big 5 Student-Athlete of the Year, marking the second straight season a Quaker has won the prestigious award.

Additionally, Penn landed four on the All-Big 5 team including first baseman Sean Phelan, McGeagh, Graul and starting pitcher Jake Cousins. The Quakers' four selections are the most since the 2015 season.

Yurkow took the Quakers to new heights in 2017 - his fourth season at the helm - leading the program to its first Ivy League Gehrig Division title and trip to the Ivy League Championship Series since 2007. Penn finished 23-22 overall with a 12-8 mark in Ivy play, and the team's 23 wins tied for fifth-most all-time in a single season in the program's history. This season marked the third 20-win campaign under Yurkow's tutelage, while also taking the Quakers to their second-ever trip to the Liberty Bell Classic Championship held at Citizens Bank Park in late April.

Graul becomes the third Quaker in the last five seasons to be named Big 5 Player of the Year, while also earning his second consecutive All-Big 5 distinction. In addition to winning the Ivy League batting title, the senior produced a .371 average with 16 doubles, six home runs and 41 RBIs - all of which were team-leading figures. Graul finishes his career in University City fourth on both Penn's all-time doubles list (41) and single-season hits list (65), while also ranking fifth in total bases in a single season with 105. The East Greenwich, R.I. native was also earned First-team All-Ivy and All-ECAC accolades.

Phelan took a big step forward in his sophomore season, ranking second on the team with a .323 average, 13 doubles and 31 RBIs while starting all 45 games at first base. His 13 doubles ranked fourth in the Ivy League to go along with 15 multi-hit contests on the year, including five three-hit games. Phelan becomes the first Penn first baseman to be named All-Big 5 since Matt McKinnon in 2015.

McGeagh finds his name on the All-Big 5 squad after batting .279 with five home runs and 20 RBIs in his second season. The sophomore's five home runs tied for second on the team, while his .463 slugging percentage and 12 doubles each ranked third. McGeagh was twice named Big 5 Player of the Week this season, most notably after a five game stretch where he batted .471 with six doubles and a home run in the first week of April.

Cousins adds a second All-Big 5 selection (2015, 2017) to his list of career accolades in addition to a unanimous first-team All-Ivy honor. The right-hander proved to be the ace of the pitching staff in his senior season, compiling a 7-2 record and a 3.15 ERA over 11 starts on the mound. His seventh win of the season came over Columbia in the Gehrig Division one-game playoff on May 7 to push his career total to 20, which now stands as the third-highest win total in program history. Cousins also finishes his time at Penn with a career 2.91 ERA, placing him sixth on the all-time ranks.
