WEST POINT, N.Y. – The University of Pennsylvania sprint football team came up just short in its bid to secure back-to-back Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) titles, falling to Army West Point in the league's inaugural championship game, 10-0. The Quaker defense held the top-ranked Black Knight offense to a season-low ten points and 132 yards on the night in the effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
*Army West Point opened the scoring with a Peter Davis 25-yard field goal on the Black Knights' first possession to cap off a six-play, 16-yard drive in the first quarter, proving to be the only points of the first half.
*The Quakers responded with two consecutive drives of 15 plays and 60-plus yards into the red zone, but came up empty-handed with a turnover on downs and a missed field goal.
*With just over two minutes remaining in the second quarter, Army West Point extended its lead to ten going into halftime on a defensive score. After the Quakers faced a fourth down inside their own 20, James Scroggins got in the backfield to block the Penn punt, and Jake Marchillo scooped it up and returned it all the way to the end zone for six.
*The Black Knights received the opening kickoff following halftime and began their march into Penn territory, but Tracey Woods Jr. stepped up on a third down to pick off Keegan West's pass at the Quakers' ten yard line.
*Although the Quakers got one of the best efforts from their defense all season, Penn could not find its way into the end zone to get within one score on the final two drives. The Black Knights eventually were able to run the clock out on their final two possessions to claim the 35th CSFL title in program history.
*The Penn defense held the top-ranked Army West Point offense to a season-low ten points and 132 yards of total offense on the night, led by six tackles each from Quinn Karam and Mateo Murgia, while Sam Smallzman recorded one sack on the night.
*Eddie Jenkins finished the night 17-of-35 passing for 214 yards, while Andrew Sutton turned in another huge night on the receiving end with six catches for a team-leading 105 yards. Jake Klaus added 19 carries for 45 yards.
