PHILADELPHIA - Running back
Jake Klaus' 112 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns were more than enough to lead the University of Pennsylvania sprint football team to a 42-7 win over visiting Post Friday night at Franklin Field. The Quakers racked up 495 yards of total offense on the night - setting a new season-high - while the defense limited the Eagles to 151 yards while causing four turnovers to secure the week six victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
*The Penn defense was first to hit the field Friday night, and showed no signs of reduced tenacity following the bye week. Post faced a 3rd & 18 from their own 29 on the opening drive when
Connor Ashton stepped in front of the Eagles' first pass attempt of the night for his team-leading third interception, setting up the Quaker offense with a short field to work with. It took all but two plays for Penn to get on the board, as Klaus took the handoff from
Eddie Jenkins and carried the ball into the end zone for a 13-yard score.
*The Eagles put together a 15-play, 43-yard drive that lasted 9:18 and advanced the ball all the way to the Penn 33 on the ensuing possession, but
Matt Gorman put a halt to things with a pass breakup on 4th & 12. Jenkins responded by opening the Quakers' drive with a 53-yard strike to
Aidan Kelly down the middle of the field, before the sophomore called his own number for a 14-yard score on the ground.
*After both sides traded scoreless possessions,
Tom Console ended Post's drive with his second interception of the year, picking off Mosley's pass on a 3rd & 19 in Penn territory. The turnover was all the Quakers needed to put the game out of reach early, as Penn marched 80 yards on eight plays to find the end zone and extend the lead to 21.
Max Jones rushed for 30 yards on four carries during the scoring drive that was capped off by Klaus' three-yard rushing touchdown.
*The Quakers kept up the intensity coming out of the half, as the offense needed just five plays and 2:24 of the clock to find pay dirt yet again. After two Klaus carries for 20 yards, Jenkins found
Marcus Jones for 15 yards down to the Post four, and Klaus punched it in for his third score of the game.
*
Michael Doulong took the following Post punt 49 yards to the Eagles' 23, setting up
Max Jones for a 23-yard scamper into the end zone on the first play of the drive. The Quakers were able to get the ball right back, as
Cole Jacobson forced a fumble on Post's first play from scrimmage that was recovered by
Quinn Karam at the Eagles' 37. Penn needed just one play to put six on the board again when Jenkins placed a perfect ball into the hands of Jones down the right side who took care of the rest.
*
Matt Gorman led the Penn defense with eight total tackles, one more than teammates Ashton and
Jack Hennigan. Jenkins was 10-for-15 through the air for 204 yards, while Jones led the receivers with three catches and 64 yards.
Ryan Leone added 66 yards on the ground, part of 105 all-purpose yards on the night for the back.
