Box Score (PDF)
PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team controlled time of possession, won the shot battle and had a large home crowd to boot on Saturday night versus Dartmouth. Unfortunately for the Quakers, they fell short in the most important category of them all: goals. The Big Green only had four shots on the night, but converted on each one, downing the Red and Blue 4-0 in front of a season-high crowd of nearly 500 fans at Rhodes Field.
KEY MOMENTS
*Dartmouth controlled the early moments of the game, and converted quickly, as Dawson McCartney found Eduvie Iboka from the left side of the box in front of an empty net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
*Rather than back down however, Penn responded valiantly, shifting the field in their favor. The first shot for the Quakers came from
Jake Kohlbrenner in the eighth minute.
*No real chances emerged for a large portion of the first half for either side, but Penn held control of the run of play. Kohlbrenner again struck for the Quakers in the 36th minute, bending a long ball just inches wide of the far post in attempts to equalize the match.
*Senior captain
Austin Kuhn tallied a shot on goal soon after, squared up perfectly but collected by the Dartmouth keeper.
*The teams would enter the break with Dartmouth holding 1-0 lead on one single shot.
*The same starting 11 emerged for the Red and Blue in the second half, and while again Penn did a good job of limiting any Big Green chances, the visitors struck again in the 58th minute on a long service sent from Henry Baldwin, finding the foot of Tyler Dowse who beat
Etan Mabourakh to send the ball to the back of the net.
*A large gap of action again followed the Big Green goal, as Penn regained momentum in the middle of the field. The Quakers tallied shots from Kuhn,
Sam Wancowicz and
Santi Musalem Pinto on a bicycle kick, but were unable to find a large enough gap to send home a score.
*The final 10 minutes of the contest belonged to Dartmouth, as the Big Green tacked on two more goals, first in the 82nd minute on a strike from Dawson McCartney and again in the 84th minute on the second score of the night from Iboka to make the final score 4-0.
PENN NOTES
*Penn outshot Dartmouth 9-4, the fourth time this season the Quakers have won the shots category. Penn is 0-4 in those games however.
*The 18 minutes played by Musalem Pinto was a career-best for the junior.
*The loss to Dartmouth was the third straight in the series with the Big Green. Penn still holds the advantage all-time, 31-26-8.
*Mabourakh made his fifth start of the season in goal, unable to capture on save on Dartmouth's efficient offensive attack.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Penn will face a short turn-around with its final non-conference match of the year up next at Rhodes Field. The Quakers welcome in Soccer Six rival Villanova on Tuesday, Oct. 17 for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
