Schumacher-Cawley Resigns As Head Women’s Volleyball Coach; To Return To Alma Mater, Penn State

PHILADELPHIA – Katie Schumacher-Cawley, the Kenneth L. Gross Head Coach of Women's Volleyball at the University of Pennsylvania, has resigned to accept an assistant coaching position at her alma mater, Penn State, Director of Athletics Dr. M. Grace Calhoun announced today.

"Katie made a positive impact on the Penn volleyball program in her one season here," Calhoun said. "We are sad to see her leave but understand the draw of returning to her alma mater. I am confident that we will find a head coach that will carry on the momentum that was built this fall."

"It is with mixed emotions that I will be leaving Penn to accept a position at Penn State," Schumacher-Cawley said. "Returning to my alma mater to coach alongside my former coach and mentor is an opportunity that I could not pass up. I want to thank Dr. Calhoun, Scott Ward and the entire Penn Athletics family for the opportunity to be a part of such a special place. Penn Athletics has been a class act since day one."

"I have had the privilege to meet so many wonderful people in such a short time. I am proud of what this team has accomplished and feel that the program is in a position to continue success on and off the court. We have a great recruiting class coming in for 2018 and I look forward to following the Penn program from afar."

Schumacher-Cawley led the Quakers to a 12-11 record this fall, including a 7-7 mark in Ivy League play. It was Penn's best record since the 2013 season.

A 2002 graduate of Penn State, Schumacher-Cawley helped lead the Nittany Lions to the 1999 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship and three Big Ten Conference titles during her career at University Park. She was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and two-time All-American.

A national search for Schumacher-Cawley's replacement will begin immediately. Schumacher-Cawley's replacement will begin immediately.
