PHILADELPHIA - Following a dominant Ivy League doubleheader weekend, University of Pennsylvania women's basketball freshman center
Eleah Parker has been named both Co-Player and Rookie of the Week by the conference office, announced Monday afternoon. The Player of the Week nod is the first of Parker's career, while the Rookie of the Week honor marks the fourth of the season for the Charlotte, N.C. native. Parker is the first freshman from Penn to be named Player of the Week since
Sydney Stipanovich did so four times during the 2013-14 season.
Parker put up gaudy numbers inside the paint in Penn wins vs. Cornell and Columbia over the weekend. In both games, the rookie notched double-doubles, going for 15 and 10 against the Big Red before breaking out for a career day against the Lions, with 22 points and 14 rebounds, both new personal bests. Throughout the entire weekend, Parker went a combined 18-for-34 (53 percent) from the floor, while tallying three blocks and two steals on defense. Parker currently leads all Ivy League freshman in points (12.2) and rebounds per game (7.4), while ranking third overall in the Ancient Eight in field goal percentage, shooting at a .507 clip.Â
The Quakers return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 17 for their third Big 5 contest of the year, making the short trip to Villanova for a matchup against the Wildcats. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
