PRINCETON, N.J. –
With the match tied at four matches apiece, senior Anaka Alankamony delivered a
3-0 win for the University of Pennsylvania's women's squash team to clinch a 5-4 triumph over No. 3 Trinity on Saturday night in the CSA
National Semifinals. With the win, the Quakers earn a berth into their second
straight national championship match against top-ranked Harvard on Sunday afternoon (2 p.m.). Watch live on @SquashTV!
It was an uphill battle for the Quakers, who had to battle
back from deficits of 3-0 and 4-3. The Bantams finished the first shift
unbeaten courtesy of wins at No. 3, No. 6 and No. 9. Junior Marie Stephan lost
for just the second time this season in the three slot (3-2). Senior Michelle
Wong also dropped a five-game decision in the No. 6 position.
In fitting fashion, it was senior captain Grace van Arkel
kick-starting the Red and Blue comeback. GVA tallied the first of three consecutive
wins for the Quakers—a 3-1 triumph at No. 8. Fellow captain Melissa Alves
followed suit with a win at No. 2. Alves has still yet to drop a match this
season (12-0). Freshman Jessica Davis evened the match at three apiece with a
3-1 win at No. 5.
The reeling Bantams answered back, re-taking the lead at 4-3 following a win at
No. 7.
Sitting on the brink of defeat, the Red and Blue nabbed the
final two matches of the night. Sophomore Reeham Salah tallied a 3-1 win in the
No. 1 slot while Alankamony sealed Penn’s second 5-4 win this season over Trinity.
Although she dropped her first game of the season, Salah moved her record to 14-0
this season atop Penn’s lineup.
The Quakers have now won 11 straight matches, entering the
final day of the season at 13-1 overall.
